I'm not sure why the 1st book wasn't made into an episode, but it probably has to do with the fact that the 2nd book and tv episode is more iconic even if they have the same dummy(slappy) in the 1st and 2nd books. The episode starts off with the kramer family doing a weird talent show as a form of family bonding, it's weird because it's done at home for the family to enjoy. The main character(amy)'s talent is ventriloquism with a dummy named dennis who is literally falling apart, by which his head falls off and amy begs her dad for a new one. Because this is the 90's and for plot device, the next day he finds one in great shape for a low low price. Hm.... maybe their is a reason why it's so cheap that the dad is overlooking and he just wants to seem like a good father
Anyways amy finds a mysterious yellow card in a pocket on the dummy's jacket, written on the cards are words in a different language that amy eventually reads aloud. It turns out these words bring the dummy to life and he's evil soooooo the rest of the episode is amy being blamed for things the dummy did. I believe that amy's sister catches slappy in the act and believes amy(I may be wrong) and the sisters somehow smash his head in on a banister or it might have been the floor as it's been awhile since I seen the episode. The important thing is that the family believes amy and they see it was slappy doing everything and with his head being broken, a cloud of green gas aka his evil spirit floats out. One last twist, who was the person that saved the kramer family? it was dennis the old dummy as he wanted amy all to himself again
This episode would scare me as a child to the point I didn't like dummies at all and I assumed they came to life when you weren't looking. Another thing that bothered is me is why didn't the family turn on the lights instead of having everyone wander in the dark and get sneak attacked by slappy
