Retro saturdays and scream

Released in 1996, scream was the right horror movie for the times(the 90's), rather then simply being another slasher flick(think 80's horror movies) it was a smart self aware horror movie for gen X. The characters do and don't fit into the horror film tropes. Even the characters themselves are huge movie fans(shaggy and skeet ulrich) who un ironically break the 4th wall "what if we were actually in a horror movie right now"

Well they are and scream doesn't let you down. The opening scene sets the tone with the death of a cute drew barrymore and her boyfriend by the ghostface killer. There is a killer going around in a small town and unlike most of these types of movies, the main characters are fans of horror movies and frequently mention what they would do to avoid the fate of a movie character's death they were watching. Gale weathers(courtney cox) and officer dewey(david arquette) round out the cast but it's neve campbell that holds it all together

The killer murdered neve campbell's mom and I'm pretty sure it is close to halloween in the movie so extra spookyness. The writing is great as just when you think you know who the real killer is(yes high school kids die in this movie from ghostface) out pops out a new twist to keep you guessing. Of course the killer is revealed at the end and I won't say who it is but it will blow your mind. Once you know who the killer is then you should watch it again and wonder how they do it

One thing that still stays with me to this day from the movie is this bathroom scene. Everytime I go to a bathroom and I'm the only on there I half expect a ghostface killer to pop out. This movie is what made the costume extremely famous even to this day. In 1996 everyone wanted to be ghostface and even though it's peter'd out, you can see a gf costume at a halloween party or trick or treating

I think I'll watch this movie now, it holds up well and if you never seen it then your in for a treat
