I think I figured out why toys r us isn't as good as in my childhood

I have to say it's the sparingly stocked shelves, yes the minimalist design may work for other big box stores but not for tru. I assume it was thought up at a board meeting as a way to create artificial scarcity(If there's only one left then they'll buy it) but it has the opposite effect. The shelves look depressing and kids will most likely go "that's it". When I was little the shelves were stocked and I really mean stocked with toys, if you so much as looked at one then the whole area would fall.

It was like real life jenga and certain aisles were noticeably darker thanks to all the product. It was sensory overload and I wanted everything. This is what a modern day toys r us fails to capture, the simple joy of not knowing what to get even if you had a thousand dollars
