Retro saturdays and beavis and butthead do america

Beavis and butthead do america is the only movie release in the beavis and butthead series and it had a theatrical release at the height of the tv show's popularity. I saw it in theaters in it's first week despite not having cable so I didn't know much about b&b(that doesn't stand for bed and breakfast) but I did enjoy the movie. I remember there was a lot of edgy kids and teens trying hard to be cool and how b&b were huge and it mocked godzilla movies at the start

The movie itself is good if you like the show otherwise it would seem pretty slow and vanilla but something about beavis and butthead gives me a lot of nostalgia. Maybe it's the fact that we only had them to worry about polluting the airways or that it was a simpler time but the movie gives me strong nostalgia

Retro saturdays and book fairs

I'm sure I'm not the only one that has strong memories about book fairs especially in elementary school. Most of my positive childhood memories revolve around reading and book fairs are just one example. Book fairs are pop up shops at elementary school that sold books(obviously) and book marks and other non book things like pencils and paper and pens and random cheap toys but for many of us it was the allure of seeing those rolling book shelves arranged in a neat display. There was something almost hypnotic about the metallic shelves displaying all the new books, maybe it was the new book smell that drew us kids similar to a pie baking on a window still to draw from a cliche

I would always check out the new goosebumps books and fear street and wanted to buy a bunch of stuff but I wasn't rich(still aren't) so I saved my money for the book order forms as those had lower prices. Even today just seeing one makes me want to stop and look at the books. Many kids today can relate to that experience and I'm glad it's not gone by the wayside(book fairs) as pretty soon my sister will go to the same elementary school I did and I will walk the same halls I did when I was younger and smaller and I will go to the book fair and mark out like a 5 year old

Retro fridays and bugle boy

Bugle boy was a clothing brand in the 90s and not some sort of giant bugle chip mascot for the triangle shaped 3D snack chips. Similar to how dickies pants/shorts were cool in the 90's and skinny jeans in this decade, bugle boy pants/shorts/shirts were extremely cool in the early to mid 90s. They were well known for their colorful "extreme" colors and patterns and designs. Picture the clothes on saved by the bell and you got the right idea and I think everything on that show was supplied by bugle boy.

There's no real reason how or why bugle boy caught on as much as it did, but it happened and now the clothing is what people think of the early 90's among with nirvana and the rodney king riots. Zubaz gets all the attention nowadays but bugle boy had a big part in the identity of the 90's and I should look for a pair of teal pants and a shirt just for the look

Retro fridays and king of fighters 1996

I'm not sure why king of fighters 1996 gives me the most nostalgia, maybe it's because it's the one I have played the most and spent the most time with. I had a tips and tricks magazine back in the 90's and one of them had a big moves list/background details about every character in this game. Oh I should mention that kof 1996 is a 2D 1 on 1 fighting game for the arcades and I don't remember what other home consoles, My memories come from the arcade version though. Anyways that game at the time had a huge roster and yes it blew my mind and I always picked terry bogard or billy and I could destroy a lot of people with them

Sadly I would move onto ultimate mortal kombat 3 and xmen vs street fighter but I'll never forget the king of fighters 1996, I haven't played it since then but I'm sure it's waiting for me after all this time to start it up and go on a nostalgia trip. Obviously I'm not sure if kof 1996 holds up today but it was a very good fighting game when I last played it so it's worth a shot

Retro saturdays and cruis'n world

Cruis'n usa may have been the original but I like cruis'n world a lot more, mostly because of the turbo boosts you can do any time(quickly double tap the accelerator) or the stunts. If you do a turbo boost before you pass someone you will get points and do a flip over them. Oh it's also possible to drive on the 2 left or right wheels like some sort of vin diesel pre fast/furious. The levels like it's name suggest, take place all over the world and even on the moon but my favorite levels are mexico and australia and china. I would spent a lot of quarters playing this game at the arcade and I did own it eventually on the n64 which had a redonklous amount of hidden cars to unlock

Now I feel like playing it on my wii(I have it on the home menu) for old times sake

Retro saturdays and metroid

Metroid was a game that I didn't play until after I already owned my snes. I would play it a lot at my neighbor's house before and sometimes after school as he had a nes and other cool nes games like smb/duck hunt and metroid and the simpsons bart vs the space mutuants. Anyways he would tell me where the secrets were like going left in the 1st room to get the morph ball. I was almost willing to trade my snes and games for his nes but I didn't. That's how good metroid was to me as a kid. I wouldn't own the game until I got metroid fusion and a gamecube as it is an unlockable when you beat the game but you need the gamecube to gba cable and I think you also need metroid prime. Yeah it was complicated but then metroid zero mission came out for the gba(remake) and I own that and it's one of my  most treasured games

Retro fridays and earthworm jim

Earthworm jim is a game I should have played more often when I was little but I never did as I never actually owned it. I rented it a few times from the local video store as the box art looked cool and yes that was a thing, you would get a game based on what the cover looked like without knowing if it was good or not. Anyways earthworm jim is a 2D platforming game for the snes, genesis and gameboy and pc but I grew up with the snes and later on the pc versions. You play as an earthworm that goes into a suit and has a ray gun of some sort. The levels and enemies and characters are all 90's soo edgy to the limit types, for example there's princess what's her name(her actual name) and one level takes place on a grill where you have to jump from hot dog to hot dog while avoid forks

The gameplay is solid and the game is normal difficulty, it's not too hard or not too easy and there are cheats if you feel it's too challenging. When I got a pc, I "borrowed" the shareware cd version of earthworm jmi or I might have gotten one of those 100+ games cd roms that had a lot of shareware games. I would never beat the game and now I own it on the gba(one of the many ports) so I will bust it out for old times sake. There was a sequel and a planned playstation 3D version although the n64 version was released but that lost it's charm. EWJ is a nice solid game despite it's toilet humor and 90'sness of it

Retro fridays and ecto cooler

Now that enough time has passed from the recent re-release I can do a proper post about ecto cooler. Anyways ecto cooler is simply citrus cooler with a snazzy new name as a tie in to the ghostbusters movies. It's a tangerine orange flavored juice with a green color. It had slimer the ghost on the front and that was that, it got famous because well I'm not sure why or how it would get so popular. The late 80's to early 90's were a weird time. I drank some a lot in my childhood especially the juice box version and I don't remember the can versions at all

Ecto cooler was officially discontinued in the late 90's but you could still get it as late as the early 00's under a different hi C name. I remember in 2004, the 99 cents store sold the packs of the juice boxes with slimer on the cover and I believe that still had them in the late 00's. Yes I do regret not getting some but luckily there was the reboot of the ghostbusters movie and I was able to get my hands again on some ecto cooler. I have a lot of both the cans of the reborn ecto and as someone that has tried both the original and the re-release, the original one tastes more orangy and sweeter, almost like a toned down version of the current orange hi C juice at mcdonalds and the re-release tastes like tangerine juice. For those of us that remember the 90's, ecto cooler was something that we took for granted but it was a popular part of the decade

I have finally got a car to myself

If you go back to my posts last year or even 2015, you will know that I don't own a car of my own. The closest to it would be my dad driving an f150 that's registered to me and my mom(so I don't drive it very much if at all) but I been saving $$ so I can get my own car. I haven't mentioned it much but I do have a wide variety of cars that I like and I had a big selection of cars to pick from. For example I e-kicked the tires on a 1996 volvo 960, a 1993 400E, a 1992 lexus ls400, a 1997 ford explorer, a 2001 mustang, a 1993 bmw 323i, a 1996 lexus es300 and many others I'm forgetting and/or don't want to turn this into a long essay. I obsessed with searching on offerup,CL and ebay autos the past 2-3 weeks and today I finally made a purchase

Of course I didn't buy it on a whim as I was watching the ad for a week and I contacted them at the right time. Anyways I got a 2000 Lexus ES300 today for a good price. I have a car that will be mine first and I would have to lend to my parents when I'm not driving it(that didn't make much sense, they would get it 2nd or 3rd after me is what I'm saying) I will post pictures tomorrow as I will go to the dmv in the morning to pay the expired tags and registration but I'm happy with my choice and now onto save my money for things in life like school or a better camera and move on with my photography

Retro saturdays and doom

Doom is one game that has my back and I have it's back for years and will continue to do so. If it was a person, doom would be my bff but it's not as it is a video game for the pc,ps1,android,ios,snes and other systems I'm forgetting and that's not including games where the full game is a bonus like the ultimate edition of doom 3 for the xbox. Doom is a fps shooter that set the mold and continues to be a great game. If you never played it, well play it anyway you can but avoid the atari jaguar version. I first played it on a pc with the windows 95 cd rom version and I was hooked. Sure it was a shareware disc and I could only play the 1st episode(the other 2 you had to pay to play and was dlc before dlc was a thing) but I did have a lot of fun just beating the same levels over and over again with cheats on. Of course there was god mod and noclipping(you could walk through walls) and infinite ammo. The cheats were just as much of the experience as the gameplay

I would later on get all of the episodes when I got ultimate doom and I couldn't stop playing, I would get doom 2 and final doom but there's something about doom that keeps me coming back for more. I would play it at my friend's house with his brother and even though he had a n64 and playstation and snes and genesis and 32x(he had parents with $$) but we would always play doom and sometimes his mom would get us pizza or ice cream or popsicles. I have doom on my droid 2 for old times sake and I have vanilla doom on this laptop I'm typing this on but it's also playable in a web browser. Doom is something that has been part of my life for a long time and it's not going away

Oh the game itself can be hard depending on your difficulty level but it's not that bad, I like the atmosphere of the levels and seeing a cyber demon for the first time and being so scared

Retro saturdays and super street fighter 2

When I first played super street fighter 2 I was wondering where this game came from and I was blown away. I thought it was simply a recolor version of sf2 but then I saw there was new characters and levels and colors and moves. Sure it may have been an expansion pack but it was nice and sf2 having new characters is never a bad thing. There isn't much to say about this game as it didn't have much time in the sun as super street fighter 2 turbo(introduced akuma and super moves) came out not long after and changed the game then there was the marvel fighting games

I never owned it on the snes or genesis and my few times playing it were at the arcade but I always destroyed people with fei long or ken and his flaming dragon punch. Now I feel like playing this on my wii

Retro fridays and sonic 3D blast

Sonic 3D blast was the first sonic game in 3D well that might be an exaggeration as it probably wasn't the first 3D sonic game and sonic 3D is an isometric perspective game so it might not be true 3D. Think of the gba spyro games or super mario rpg and it has similar graphics and camera angle. But at the time it was a breakthrough even if the game isn't that much fun. I had a good time as a kid just exploring the levels and I wasn't sure what to do but it was nice to break free of the 2D side scrolling left to right.  While it brought something different it was a let down especially with the sega saturn port as sonic xtreme got cancelled. I had sonic 3D blast for a brief time when I briefly owned a sega genesis and just could not stop playing it

Nowadays it's seen as a black sheep but back in the 90's, sonic 3D blast was pretty impressive and the genesis version has good reviews

Retro fridays and from justin to kelly

To many people this movie is drawing a blank and to other's it's making you laugh. I didn't see the movie to justin to kelly but I do remember all the ads/tv commercials/promotion and that's what gives me the most nostalgia especially in 2017. If you watched the 1st season of american idol then you know that justin guarini and kelly clarkson were the big standouts and even though kelly clarkson won(no spoilers) american idol, they both ended up famous after the show. One project they both did after the show was the movie from justin to kelly staring well guess who. It was a box office flop and pretty low rated movie but it didn't stop kelly's momentum

Kelly clarkson of course became a bigger star thanks to her hit since U been gone and now it's fun to look back to the start of her career and to from justin to kelly

I have been working a lot recently again

and yes I made this post before, I have been working at least 4 days a week in a pay week and sometimes 5 with me working 6 days in a week so I haven't had much free time or energy to do some things. I keep putting off on getting a haircut among one of those things. When I do have free time I spend it car hunting on ebay autos and cl and offerup and just enjoying the internet. I'll work on some retro fridays posts as this has taken up some time(I keep getting distracted)

Wednesday, May 3, 2017

I'm taking a break from the retro this week

Mostly because I have been working a lot of days recently and hours in those days too. For example on saturday I worked almost 9 hours and some of those days were 8+ hours with last night being the 5th day in a row. I have today off which I will use to put away some of the things I got yesterday and get a haircut and be sleepy and search for cars. So all that will take away time from me typing up blog posts(except for this one). Anyways I have enough $ to get a cheaper car but I will have to save more $ to pay the registration plus insurance so if I did get one I would just keep it parked
